Preface

This note is presented as a concise material for pile foundation design. There are lots of textbooks, materials, and videos available on pile foundation design. However, oftentimes, new designers are usually faced with the challenge of following the logical process of design due to the need to make references to numerous materials and different chapters of books. Even old designers often have this challenge too. This is usually a tedious process. The author intends to reduce this stress by presenting most of these requirements (according to the Eurocodes) in one logical order in this note. Attached also is a practical solved problem.

The note is arranged in sections and each section describes an aspect of pile knowledge. Section one (1) gives a brief introduction to the topic. Section two (2) gives the different classes of the pile that is common knowledge together with a diagrammatic representation of most of them. Section three (3) shows the various decisions and assumptions made for the design of the pile foundation and also includes a practical solved example.

The note would be most useful to students and recent graduates of geotechnical and structural engineering. However, experienced practitioners will find something useful in the note.
